Correspondence, especially from early 20th century, of Raaen and other family members including brother Tosten's letters to neighbor John Mark; her detailed diaries for 1939-1941 while teaching in Newburgh Township, and a family chonology; file on her teaching career in Hawaii (1922-1928) and as a student at the University of Berlin (1913-1915); correspondence of mother Ragnhild and various documents of her father Thomas; extensive research notes regarding the home community of Newburgh Township and its people; her manuscripts on local history, files on persons (Hazel Byrnes, Hamarsbøn family, Paula Kloster, Asle Lien, Johannes Strand family of Sharon, N.D. and Benjamin Wist), and her numerous published newspaper articles. The Hallinglag material includes correspondence and clippings regarding meetings at Northwood, N.D. and articles by Raaen in its magazine "Hallingen." There is also an article by Sarah Foss Hanson regarding Raaen, several poems by Raaen, copy of one article from the Publications Series regarding alcoholism, and photocopies of all the photographs in the original collection. Reproductions were made of selected photographs.

Hazel Webster was born at Charles City, Iowa on July 29, 1886, the daughter of Abel B. and Susanna Haines Webster. After earning her B.A. from Iowa State Teachers College at Iowa Falls (1910), she became supervisor of teacher training at Peru (Nebraska) Teachers College (1910-1912). She married Frank Lloyd Byrnes on January 1, 1912, and they lived at Summers, Montana, where Frank was superintendent of schools (1912-1917). She taught at the State Teachers College at Cedar Falls, Iowa (1917-1919) ...

Born in 1873 in Iowa, daughter of Thomas and Ragnhild (Rødningen) Raaen, Norwegian immigrants. Family moved to Steele County, N.D. homesteaded near Hatton in 1874. She graduated in 1903 from Mayville Normal School and in 1913 from University of Minnesota. Taught school in rural schools and Oak Grove School, Fargo, N.D.
